Grow Your Faith

All things start out small. When you plant a tree it starts as a sapling and if it is watered and fed it grows to a towering tree. People are born into this world as babies and with the right nutrients grow up to adults. The same is true with your faith. It begins small, but if nurtured and fed it grows. Romans 12:3 gives us this insight, “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith” Everyone has the potential to grow their faith. We all are given a “measure of faith” as a follower of Christ. The question is what are we doing to “GROW OUR FAITH”?

There are two major ingredients to growing our faith

FIRST:

Faith grows by listening to, studying, and immersing ourselves in the Word of God. Romans 10:17 tells us, “So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The Word of God contains the nutrients needed to grow our faith.

If we hear the Word of God, our faith will grow. Hearing the Word includes mediating on the Word, reading the Word, and speaking the Word. This is how we assimilate the Word into our hearts. David said, “I have hidden your Word in my heart...” (Psalms 119:11) Joshua 1:8 tells us to, “meditate on it (the Word) day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” and

SECOND:

Faith also grows through use. The more you use your faith the stronger it becomes. We must put the Word into practice. It is like exercise to muscles. When you exercise your muscles they grow. When you exercise your faith by using it, it will grow. An aspiring body-builder doesn’t begin by lifting 500 pounds the first day. Rather, he exercises daily, gradually increasing his strength. Regularly exercising faith can bring about similar growth in your faith. James 1:22 says, “be doers of the word, and not hearers only,”. In other words put your faith in to action.

Many people talk about their faith, but they never actually use their faith. James 2:17 tells us, “In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.” Faith is a living thing. It cannot be dormant. Faith moves. Faith acts. Faith does. It doesn’t just sit; it produces. Grow your faith by being a doer of the Word.

Jesus himself referred to those who at “no” faith, “little” faith, and “great” faith”. We need to grow in our faith. May it never be said of us, “O you of little faith!” Let’s feed our faith daily with the Word of God and daily exercise our faith by putting the Word into practice.

As we do our faith will grow and we will be people of GREAT FAITH!
