Are You Peculiar?

Are you peculiar to the world around you? 1 Peter 2:9 says, “You are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people;”. We are called to be God’s “peculiar” people living here in this world; not weird, goofy, or nutty, but special and unique. We belong to a special group of people who are the unique possession of God. We are part of His eternal family. We’re not like other people in the world, — we’re unique – peculiar. Are YOU peculiar?

That simply means your life should be different and unique from that of the world and that you would bring glory to God. We need to avoid the trap and pressure of culture that wants us to conform to the world around us. Instead of being unique and special often we do the opposite, trying to fit in with a world that is in conflict and opposed to the ways of God. Instead of standing out, we tend to blend in and become like the world.

I want encourage you to be the “peculiar” (not weird) and special person God has made you to be. Each of us have been created for a specific reason (Jeremiah 1:5), and in a special way (Psalms 139:14). Part of your purpose is to influence the world around you instead of the world influencing you. Jesus compared our lives to that of salt, a substance that preserves and flavors. As Christians we can bring real life to those who do not know Christ. (Matthew 5:13-15) We can be an example of Him and His love here on earth today. But if we allow ourselves to become blended into the world in such a way that we lose our ability to share the Gospel or proclaim the good news; if we sacrifice our values to fit in and lose our saltiness, what good are we?

God calls us to be a peculiar people, a people who others can identify as His. A people that the unsaved will look at with wonder, asking themselves what makes us so different, so unique, and so special. Today, will you allow your saltiness to flavor the world around you? Will you let others notice you because you’re “peculiar”, or will you give in to the pressure and give up what makes you special and simply blend in to the world?

Be the “peculiar” (unquie-special) person God has ordained you to be!
