4 Keys to Possessing the Promises of God

God is not trying to keep His promises from you.  In  fact the promises of God are for you. There are literally thousands of promises in the Word of God just waiting for you to possess them. Promises of peace, joy, protection, direction, provision, favor, deliverance, help, hope, and much more. (click here for list of promises in every book of the Bible). 2Peter 1:4 says God has given you “exceedingly great and precious promises” for this life.  You just need to know how to possess the promises of God. Here are 4 keys to possessing the promises of God;

People Are Destroyed Because They Don’t Know the Promises

1. Find the promise in the Word of God. The first step to possessing the promises of God is to find as many scriptures as you can that promise what you need. Then begin sowing (reading, meditating, listening to) those scriptures into your heart. (Mark 4:14) You can not possess that which you do not know exists. Many believers are not aware of what God has promised for them. Hosea 4:6 says, “My people parish because of a lack of knowledge”. This is talking about the knowledge of God’s Word.

As a pastor I have had hundreds of people ask me to pray for them about something. I usually ask them what scriptures are they standing on? Most of the time I get a blank stare. It is important to know what God’s Word says and has promised. It is a key to possessing the promises.

Overcoming Doubt and Unbelief

2. Believe that you receive the promise. Finding the promises of God in the Bible is very important, but just because there is a promise in the Bible doesn’t mean you are going to automatically possess it. It takes FAITH! Hebrews 6:12 (NCV) says, “do not… become lazy. Be like those who through faith and patience will receive what God has promised.” It takes faith to possess the promises of God!Believing God and His Word is a critical part of Faith. This is not just knowing in your head what God has promised, but believing it in your heart (spirit).

Doubting God or thinking the promise is not for you will rob you of the promises of God. Doubt and unbelief are enemies of faith. You must believe without doubting or wavering to receive the promises. (James 1:5) You must be fully persuaded that God will do what He has promised. (Romans 4:21) If you are wavering or doubting the promises of God – begin meditating on His Word until all doubt is gone. You must settle in your heart that it is God’s will for all people to obtain His promises. You must believe to possess the promises of God.

Only Speak the Word

3. Speak God’s promise (His Word). Faith is believing and speaking. (2Corinthians 4:13) To possess the promises of God you must declare with your mouth the promise of God’s Word. (Romans 10:9) Romans 4:17 says, “Call those things that are not as though they were.” That simply means don’t speak the circumstances or anything that’s contrary to what the Word says (Proverbs 18:21) only speak what the Word says.

For example if you are believing God’s promise for healing according to 1 Peter 2:24 which says, “by whose stripes you were healed.” You would say, “I am healed by the stripes of Jesus”, even if everything looks like your sick – fever, cough, runny nose, etc. We don’t speak the situation. At the same time we don’t say, “I’m not sick. I’m not receiving that”. That would be “calling things that be as though they are not”. That’s not Bible – that’s not faith. We don’t deny the facts we just believe the “truth”. Speak God’s promise to possess His promises!

Overcoming Fear

4. Hold fast your profession of faith. (Hebrews 10:23) It is through faith and “PATIENCE” that we possess the promises of God. (Hebrews 6:12) There are not any microwave results in the kingdom of God. If you’re going to possess the promises of God you will have to persevere. The enemy will try and steal the promise from you by tempting you to quit, to give up, or let go of God’s promise. He will try to intimidate you and get you into fear.

There is a story in Numbers 13 where God told Moses to send twelve men, one from each of the twelve tribes of Israel to spy out the land of Canaan, which is also known as the Promised Land. God had given them the land, but they had to go in and possess it in order to receive it.

Ten out of the twelve spies came back with a bad report because they had seen walled cities and giants in the land. The enemy was trying to get them to give up on God’s promise. They knew God had promised the land and it was exactly as He said it was – a land flowing with milk and honey, but they feared the giants more than they believed God.

Two of the twelve spies, Joshua and Caleb didn’t deny that there were giants in the land, but they came back with a different spirit.. They said, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.” (Numbers 13:30) They had a spirit of faith and the perseverance to face the obstacles before them to cross over and possess the promised land.

Crossover and Possess Your Promises

God has given you all the promises, but you must crossover and possess them. Some of you are standing on the brink of your “promised land”, but you are about to give up. Some of you are in fear of the giants before you. Others have doubts and are wavering at the promise.

I encourage to cross over and possess the promises of God. Find the promise in His Word, believe in your heart, speak the promise with your mouth, and don’t give up. Possess God’s Promises for your life!
