5 Things Jesus Would Do

A few years ago there was a very popular bracelet that had the letters “WWJD”, they stood for – “What would Jesus do”. It was a tool to remind us as Christians whenever we faced situations and decisions in are daily walk to ask ourselves that question and try to respond in the way Jesus would.

I want to take that slogan and come at it from a little different perspective and ask the question this way, “What would Jesus do- if He were here right now?”

Obviously there would be many things Jesus would be doing if He were here physically. Today I want to focus on just 5 very important things Jesus would be doing right now-

  1. Jesus would be preaching “repentance”.

The first demand of Jesus’ public ministry was for people to, “Repent.” He gave this command to all who would listen. It was a call for a radical changein thinking toward God and His relationship with man. (Matthew 4:17) He commanded that repentance be preached to all nations in His name. (Luke 24:47) He emphatically explained that none are excluded. All need repentance. And the need is urgent. Jesus said, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Luke 13:3.

Today, Jesus is no less passionate about people needing to make a change of mind and heart toward God, that is what true repentance is, than He was 2000 years ago. He expects us as the body of Christ to share that message as His representative (ambassadors) here in this foreign land called earth . If Jesus were here physically on earth He would be preaching repentance.

  1. Jesus would be helping the “poor and needing”.

Jesus’ first sermon is recorded in Luke 4:18- and the very first thing He addresses is the poor. He said, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor..” In Luke 14:13 He made this point, “But when you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind,” When Jesus saw the multitude and the needs they had “He was moved with compassion”. (Matthew 9:36 ) Jesus taught us that we should give to those who are poor and in need: “…He who has two tunics, let him give to him who has none; and he who has food, let him do likewise.”

Today if Jesus were here physically He would be moved with that same compassion to help the poor and needy. You and I are here and we should have that same compassion to help the poor. It’s really quite simple, when you love and serve the poor, you love and serve Christ.

  1. Jesus would be “praying”

Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed”. (Luke 5:16 NIV) Prayer was a daily part of Jesus life. Jesus prayed for others and He prayed with others. Prayer is the way He communicated with the Father. Jesus is praying in heaven now for us. (Hebrews 7:25) Prayer was and is extremely important to Jesus.

Jesus would still be praying if He were here on the earth. As followers of Christ we are to pray. He instructed his disciples how to pray. (Luke 11:1ff) He told His disciples to “watch and pray”. When we pray we are communicated with God.

  1. Jesus would be teaching – “making disciples”.

Then Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the gospel of the kingdom,…” (Matthew 9:35) Every where Jesus went He taught. He taught about the scriptures and the Holy Spirit. He shared spiritual truths about life and ministry and He demonstrated how to live a Christ centered life. Jesus was committed to making disciples by teaching.

In Matthew 28:19 He commands us (believers) to go and make disciples, “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, “. It is critical for us to not only share the gospel and get people saved, but it is extremely important we teach people (make disciples) by sharing and explaining biblical truths that truly promotes a lifetime of sanctification and spiritual growth. If Jesus were here today He would be teaching – making disciples!

  1. Jesus would be healing the sick.

God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power, who went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with Him.” (Acts 10:38) Almost, every place Jesus went He healed the sick. He healed the multitudes and He healed the individual, the woman with the issue of blood, blind Bartimaeus, the leper, and many others. Jesus has not changed Hebrews 13:8 tells us, “Jesus is the same yesterday, today and forever”.

Today the healing ministry of Jesus is still happening through believers. “Believers will lay hands upon the sick and they will recover.” (Mark 16:18) If Jesus were here today He personally would be healing the sick.

While Jesus is not on the earth physically He is here through us. We are the body of Christ. We are the hands and feet of Jesus. Jesus said, “I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father. ”. (John 14:12) We should be doing all the things Jesus would be doing. Jesus is not physically on the earth, but He is through us.

If Jesus were here He would be – Preaching repentance, helping the poor, praying, teaching, and healing the sick. Let each of us do are part to do what Jesus would be doing.
