Conquer Your Fears

Everyone experiences fear in their life.  Fear is a natural emotion that can be helpful by keeping us from entering into a dangerous situation, but it can become distorted and perverted keeping us from fulfilling our true purpose here in life.  The spirit of fear can cause you to become immobilized and  unable to think clearly or to take action.  Fear is a tool the devil uses against us to make us miserable and destroy our lives. It begins as a thought and then creates emotions that can rule us in negative ways. However, fear does not have to dominate your life.

2 Timothy 1:7 tells us, “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.”   The opposite of fear is faith.   When you allow fear to dominate your life you have taken God out of the equation.  Faith puts God in the equation.   If fear tries to come upon you, ask yourself the following questions:

  • Where does it come from? (You know it isn’t from God.)
  • Has God ever failed me in the past?
  • Does He promise to meet all of my needs?
  • Does He keep His promises?

Remember God is faithful and He is always with you.  Isaiah 41:10 says, “FEAR NOT for I am with you.” Here are four more things you can do to conquer fear in your life;

1) Keep your trust in the Lord. Trust is the basis of faith and when faith is present fear has to flee. Throughout the Bible we find countless stories of God’s faithfulness.  From Abraham to Isaiah to David to Job to Jonah to Paul to John, we see God’s constant love and care for His people.   When the apostle Paul encounter difficulties that could have caused him to fear he would always remember that, “God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose” (Rom. 8:28) This is concrete proof that for those who trust in God, He will turn every difficulty, loss, and separation into something good.

2) Continue to walk in love.  “There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love.”  (1 John 4:18)

3) Meditate on His Word. His Word is a lamp that will give you clear guidance when circumstances are bleak and bring light into darkness.  The Word of God provides the direction needed to navigate through troubled waters. When you meditate upon it, pray over it, speak it, and live by it, His light chases away fearful thoughts. When you hear the Word faith comes. (Romans 10:17)  If fear is trying to control your life read the book of  Psalms everyday it is helpful in conquering fear.

4) Control your thoughts.  As I mentioned earlier fear begins with in our thoughts.  If you take control of those thoughts at the onset you can stop fear before it takes root.  2Corinthian 10:4-5 tells us,”For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.”  Bring your thought under control by thinking on things that are good and pure.  (Philippians 4:8)

You can conquer any fear that is in your life. God is for you and He will help you.  Keep your eyes fixed on Him, He is the author and finisher of your faith.  (Hebrews 12:2)  If you live by faith and not sight, walk in love, mediate on the Word, and control your thoughts you will find strength in Him and CONQUER EVERY AND ANY FEAR!

You do not have the spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.
