Being a Servant – Biblical Key for Christian Living

Being a Servant by Pastor Bruce Edwards

7 Keys for Christian Living

Being a servant is one of several Biblical keys for Christian living.  Using this key will help unlock the power of God within you to help you live an overcoming and victorious life.  Living the Christian life is the most exciting adventure on planet earth. There are many aspect of the Christian life that run counter to the worlds way of thinking. One of those is the attitude in which we approach and live our lives. The apostle Paul challenges us in Philippians 2:5-7 to have the same attitude as Jesus, “Have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. Although he was in the form of God and equal with God, he did not take advantage of this equality. Instead, he emptied himself by taking on the form of a servant, by becoming like other humans, by having a human appearance.”

Notice he says to have the same “attitude” that Jesus had we must be a “servant”.  Being a servant is at the very heart of being a Christian. It is one of the Biblical keys for Christian living. It is not something forced on us it is a choice we make. It runs counter to the world.

The world defines greatness in terms of power, possessions, prestige, and position. If you can demand service from others, you’ve arrived. In our self-serving culture with its ‘me-first’ mentality, being a servant is not a popular concept. Jesus, however, measured greatness in terms of service, not status. God determines your greatness by how many people you serve, not how many people serve you. This is so contrary to the world’s idea of greatness that we have a hard time understanding it, much less practicing it. Jesus himself did not come to be served, but to serve. (Matthew 10:28)

4 Keys to Being a Servant

Being a servant is choice.    Here four keys to being a servant;

1. Be humble before the Lord. We serve not for significance or recognition, but out of love for people and the Lord. A servant of the Lord has a spirit of humility

2. Be available to the Lord. To serve others we must be available. We must be alert and looking for opportunities to serve. As a faithful servant all of the resources we have; finances, time, gifts, talents, energy, abilities, etc. are available to Him to be used to serve others.

3. Be surrendered to the Lord. Not my will be done, but His will be done. Surrendering to God’s agenda is key to fulfilling the call of servanthood. A servant is unselfish.

4. Be obedient to the Lord. Blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it. (Luke 11:28) If we are to be a faithful servant, we must be willing to obey regardless of the cost. Obedience consists of three components: (1) timeliness (act or speak when the Lord indicates, not before and not after); (2) totalness (partial obedience is disobedience); and (3) joyfullness (not grumbling, complaining, whining, etc.)

If you want to live the Christian life to the fullest and truly be great in the kingdom of God, you must choose to be a servant. God is not looking for more stars; He’s looking for more servants. Choose to be a “servant”, it is one of the Biblical Keys for Christian living.
