Can We Really Trust God? 4 keys to why and how to trust God
Can We Really Trust God?
Just trust God! Often this is the advice and encouragement we’re given whenever we are in the middle of a storm or facing some kind of trouble, or up against a major problem. It is good advice, but it is easier said than done. Most of us struggle with trust and wonder if we can really trust God especially when life is hard, when prayers seem to go unanswered, or when we suffer a set back or disappointment?
Trust is Not Easy
Trust, it’s not something that is easily done. In the journey of life we put our trust in someone or something only to be disappointed. Some times things have happened where we’ve questioned God and even blamed God. All of these life experiences tend to create doubts that make us unsure about trusting God.
So, can we really trust God? Why should we trust God and how do we trust Him?
#1 Knowing God is Trustworthy
First, the foundation of trusting God is God Himself. This should be a no brainier. God is one hindered percent trustworthy. He is never the cause of any of our problems, disasters, or troubles. God is a good God and He is a very present help in time of trouble. (Psalms 46:1)
God is Not Your Problem
If you think God is causing your problems and using them as a way to discipline you or using them as some form of retribution for the wrongs in your life you will never be able to trust God. Trusting God begins with knowing His true character and who He really is.
Why Trust God?
Why should you trust God? Because He is trustworthy and faithful. Men will let you down. Governments will let you down. Organizations will disappoint you, but God is faithful. Psalms 20:7 says, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” The Bible instructs us to trust God., Proverbs 3:5 tells us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;” While we sleep, the Lord is awake. You can trust God!
The first key to trusting God is knowing God is trustworthy. Get to know God – your heavenly Father better each and every day. Then more you know God the more you will trust Him.
#2 Choose to Trust God
Second, you have to choose to trust God. God is one hundred percent trustworthy, but you still have to walk by faith and put your trust in Him.
When David stood face to face against the giant Goliath he trusted God to deliver him. He began to remember all the times God had rescued him in the past including “from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear”. He trusted God would do it again and deliver him from the “hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:37) The secret of David’s success was his ability to trust and obey God.
At some point, each of us will face what seems to be a “giant” – some problem or difficulty that looks impossible. We must put our trust in God if we are to overcome. How? Just like David don’t look at how big the “giant” is look at how big God is and remember the past victories God has helped you win.
How to Trust God – 4 Keys
How can you walk by faith and choose to trust God? Just like David
1) Remember how God has delivered you in the past. God has given you many victories. Rehearse them in your mind. You first win spiritual victories in your mind. If you cave into feelings of fear and doubt, you will lose. When you focus on the truth of God’s Word, you win every time.
2) Don’t listen to the enemy. David had to ignore his brothers, the other soldiers, even King Saul. They all doubted David could kill Goliath. They laughed at him. David turned his heart toward God and ignored the nay sayers.
3) Keep your words right. David declared, “I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel” David confessed his belief that he could not lose because God was with him.
4) Trust in the power of God. David did not put his trust in Saul’s Armour or a spear or a javelin to defeat Goliath. He trusted in the power of God and God provided the victory.
