Christmas not about baby Jesus – what is Christmas really about
CHRISTMAS IS NOT ABOUT BABY JESUS
Christmas is not about baby Jesus. Yes, Jesus was born into this world as a baby, but Jesus didn’t stay that way. The Christmas story is sweet, special, and supernatural, but it is only the beginning. If that were the end of the story, we wouldn’t even know the story. So, what is the end of the story? What is Christmas really about?
Christmas Means…
Christmas means different things to different people. For most, it means having a joyful time with family and friends. For children, it’s about opening presents and Santa Claus. To merchants, it means the season when they make their greatest profits. Jesus didn’t come for any of these reasons nor did He even come for the more religious celebrations about the birth of Jesus.
Without the Resurrection there would be no Christmas
The birth of Jesus is significant because of His death and resurrection. Without the resurrection of Jesus, we wouldn’t be celebrating Christmas. The central truth of the Christmas story is this: The Baby in that manger is God. Christmas is about the miracle of God coming into our world as a baby for the purpose of redeeming us and restoring us back to God.
Jesus the Lamb of God
Yes, God came into this world as a baby, but then for thirty-three years Jesus lived a life free from sin so that He could be the perfect sacrificial lamb for the atonement of our sins. On Calvary, what once was a baby became the “lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”. He paid the price for our sins and overcame death so that we could have victory over sin and condemnation. So, when that precious baby was born and placed in the manger, it wasn’t just another birth. It was the beginning of God’s redemptive plan for humanity.
It’s About His Deity
Christmas is not about the infancy of our Savior, but about His deity. This baby born in a stable and laying in a manger was the Son of God incarnate. He was Immanuel, which translated means “God with us.” He is the Creator of heaven and earth, He is the giver of life, He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings.
The prophet Isaiah 700 years before the birth of Jesus prophesied, “For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.7 Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end…” Isaiah 9:6
Why Did Jesus Come?
Why did Jesus come? Why did God send His son to this sometimes cruel and hard world? He sent Jesus to us so that one day, He would grow up to become our redeemer. The savior of the world. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” John 3:16
Christmas is About…
Without Jesus, we would all die in our sins. Jesus did not come to start a religion He came to become the Savior of the world. He came as a baby, growing up to die on the cross for our sins, and rising from the dead. In short, Jesus was born to overcome the very things that left unchecked would destroy the human spirit of love, tenderness, and selflessness celebrated by the world at Christmas. This is what Christmas is about.
Reason for the Season
I enjoy many of the traditions the world has adopted over the years, but for me Christmas is a very special time to celebrate the moment God stepped foot on planet earth to become our Savior. Jesus is truly the reason for the season. Because Jesus, this King, brings peace on earth, ultimate and permanent peace.
Look at Christmas in a new way this year. If Jesus is not the reason for the season, then make this the year to invite Jesus into your heart. It is the only way to truly have a “Merry Christmas.” The joy and peace you receive will last all year as you look to God for all your needs to be met.
Jesus Is the Reason For The Season! Rejoice!
