Key to Winning from Coach Popovich
Congratulations to the San Antonio Spurs who just won the National Basketball Association Championship. They won in a very convincing fashion. Their unselfish team play and commitment to the goals and vision of the team were key factors in their dominating championship run this year. I say that because we can learn from the Spurs a key to winning as leaders in ministry.
Everybody wants to win rather its playing checkers, winning NBA Championships or accomplishing the vision of the organization or ministry, that’s what winning is really about. The question is how to we successfully do that?
Well, obviously we need vision and a strategic plan to accomplish that vision, but we need to have the right team. A team that is unselfish and committed to excellence and the vision of the team as a whole.
I’m inspired by the San Antonio Spurs and how the leadership of that team has been able to get every team member to align themselves to the goals, culture and strategy of the team. This is one of the most critical things we need to do as leaders. Pick the right team members and get them all to buy into the team goals.
Coach Gregg Popovich, who will end up being one of the best coaches in NBA history, said this after the the Spurs won their 5th NBA Championship: “No one is bigger than the team. If you can’t do things our way, you’re not getting time here, and we don’t care who you are.” As the leader of that team he expects every player to be committed to the team and demands excellence from every team member.
As a leader in ministry take a cue from Coach Popivich and get your team unselfishly focused and committed to the goals and culture of your team. Expect excellence and watch your ministry win!
May your “win” help build the Kingdom of God.
Team work makes the dream work!
